Following a two-year construction under developer Faris-Walker Co., the building that is now the Shybary Grand Lofts opened in 1923 as the home of the now defunct Fifth Street Department Store. Prolific architect Aleck Curlett designed the twelve-story, steel-framed, building which stands on a two story stone base, with arched openings across the street-facing façades. After the Fifth Street Department Store shuttered its doors, other commercial tenants occupied the space including Faris & Walker Department Stores, Orbach’s, and Milliron’s. Developer Barry Shy purchased the building in 2004 with a vision to restore and repurpose the structure into 280 condominiums.
The conversion was completed later in 2004 and the Shybary Grand Lofts (aka SB Grand Lofts) went on sale as studio (470 – 935 sf), one-bedroom (470 – 1,956 sf), and two-bedroom (1,040 – 1,300 sf) apartments in addition to two penthouse suites. The historical charm of the SB Grand Lofts has been preserved with original dark brick, stone façades on the third, eleventh, and twelfth stories, as well as wrought-iron fire escapes in the center of each street-facing façade. Modern improvements include a fitness center, rooftop pool, spa, sundeck and barbecue area, and trash shoots on every floor. Residences offer large industrial windows, 15’ ceilings, and 8’ high entry doors. Select units include private balconies and the two penthouses enjoy their own private rooftop patios with spas.
