The former home of the Eastern Columbia Outfitting Company’s flagship furniture and clothing store, the Eastern Columbia Building held the title of the tallest building in Downtown Los Angeles when it opened in on September 12, 1930. This 13-story, turquoise clad, art deco tower was designed by famous architect Claud Beelman with a showy façade featuring sunburst patters, geometric shapes, zigzags, chevrons and stylized animal and plant forms. Its most pronounced motif, a four-sided clock tower emblazoned with the name Eastern caps the building.
The retail operations of Eastern Columbia Outfitting Company ceased in 1957 and for nearly 60 years local garment businesses and arts organizations occupied a building in badly need of an update. New life was breathed into the Eastern Columbia Building in 2006 when this Downtown Los Angeles landmark underwent a $30 million transformation into 147 luxurious contemporary condominiums. A 2008 Conservancy Preservation Award winner, the Eastern Columbia Building redesign was spearheaded by award-winning architectural firm Killefer Flammang Architects in conjunction with internationally acclaimed Kelly Wearstler Interior Design.
Historical opulence meets luxurious modern amenities at the revitalized Eastern Columbia Building. Before reaching your home, guests are greeted by a fountain appointed entry courtyard leading in to an elegant lobby. Directly under the west face of the historic clock tower you can now find a sun deck terrace complete with a swimming pool, spa, and outdoor fireplace. A separate leisure terrace connects to your fitness studio and further vantage points of Downtown Los Angeles and beyond.
